# E-Scooter Rules in Sharjah 2026: What’s Confirmed and How It Differs from Dubai

9 min read Updated October 2026 By Alex at IonicRide

You have your Dubai e-scooter permit sorted. Does it cover you when you ride into
Sharjah?

No — the RTA permit is a Dubai document. But Sharjah has not published a clear e-
scooter rulebook either. Many websites (including an earlier version of this page)
list a “Sharjah permit”, a 15 km/h limit and fixed fines. IonicRide could not confirm
any of those in an official Sharjah source.

This guide separates **what is confirmed** from **what is not**, and gives you a
safe way to ride in Sharjah until official rules are published.

By [Alex Rahman](https://ionicride.com/author-alex-rahman/) (pen name) at IonicRide—

and reputable UAE news reports. IonicRide does not operate a repair workshop or
sell scooters. See our [editorial policy](https://ionicride.com/editorial-policy/).

⚠️ Important — October 2026 update

We rewrote this guide after checking it against official sources. Earlier claims
about a separate Sharjah permit, a 15 km/h speed limit and a Sharjah fine table
could not be verified, so we removed them. If Sharjah Police or the Sharjah authorities
publish formal e-scooter rules, we will update this page.

## Quick Answer: Sharjah vs Dubai

#### What Is Confirmed — Dubai vs Sharjah

 Checked Oct 2026

  | Question | Dubai | Sharjah |
   | Riding permit | RTA permit (17+), or a valid driving licence | No public permit system found |
 | Does the Dubai permit apply? | — | No — it is issued for Dubai |
 | Helmet | Required | Urged by Sharjah Police |
 | Speed limit | 20 km/h | No official figure found |
 | Main roads | Banned on roads above 60 km/h | Police target riding on main roads and in subways |
 | Published fine list | Yes (from AED 200) | No official list found |

## What Sharjah Police Have Said

The clearest official signal comes from Sharjah Police enforcement campaigns. According
to [Gulf News](https://gulfnews.com/uae/transport/sharjah-police-seize-22974-scooters-and-bicycles-for-violating-safety-norms-1.101575371),
Sharjah Police seized **22,974 e-scooters and bicycles in 2023** for safety violations.
The report said:

 * The most common violation was **riding in places and on roads not designated**
   for scooters and bicycles.
 * The campaign aimed to stop riding on **main roads and in subways (underpasses)**.
 * Riders were urged to wear **helmets and reflective clothing**.
 * Only **one rider at a time** — no passengers — and no heavy loads that unbalance
   the scooter.

So, even without a published rulebook, confiscation is a real risk. If your scooter
is seized, our guide to [getting a confiscated e-scooter back in Sharjah and other emirates](https://ionicride.com/uae-laws/e-scooter-confiscated-in-sharjah-ajman-or-abu-dhabi-heres-what-to-do-in-every-emirate/)
explains the usual steps.

## What We Could Not Confirm

These claims appear on many websites, but IonicRide found no official Sharjah source
for them as of October 2026:

Unverified

⚠️

#### A separate “Sharjah e-scooter permit”

We found no Sharjah application page or official announcement of a rider permit.
Be careful with websites or agents offering one.

Unverified

⚠️

#### A fixed Sharjah speed limit or fine table

Figures such as “15 km/h” or “AED 500” are widely repeated but we could not trace
them to Sharjah Police or another authority.

Unverified

⚠️

#### An official map of approved riding zones

We found no official Sharjah e-scooter zone map. Signs on the ground and police
instructions are what count.

## How to Ride Safely in Sharjah Until Rules Are Published

IonicRide’s practical advice is to follow the strictest rules you already know —
Dubai’s — plus what Sharjah Police have asked for:

 * ✓ **Wear a helmet every ride.** Sharjah Police urge it, and it is required in
Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Our [e-scooter helmet guide](https://ionicride.com/reviews/best-electric-scooter-helmet-dubai-2026/)
compares options available in the UAE.
 * ✓ **Stay off main roads and out of subways/underpasses.** This is the behaviour
   Sharjah Police campaigns target most.
 * ✓ **Use cycle paths, parks and quiet areas where riding is clearly allowed.**
If a sign says no scooters, don’t ride.
 * ✓ **Keep your speed low.** 20 km/h (Dubai’s limit) is a sensible maximum; slow
   down further near pedestrians.
 * ✓ **One rider only.** No passengers and no heavy bags hanging from the handlebar.
 * ✓ **Use lights and reflective clothing at night.**
 * ✓ **Under 17? Don’t ride in public.** Dubai’s RTA permit requires riders to be
17+, and Sharjah has published no lower age.
 * ✓ **When in doubt, ask Sharjah Police** before riding in a new area.

## If You Ride in Both Dubai and Sharjah

Many people commute between the two emirates. If you use an e-scooter in both:

 * **In Dubai:** you need the RTA permit unless you hold a valid UAE or international
driving licence. Ride only where RTA allows, at up to 20 km/h, with a helmet.
See our [RTA e-scooter permit guide](https://ionicride.com/uae-laws/e-scooter-license-dubai-how-to-apply-cost-requirements-2026/)
and the full [Dubai e-scooter rules](https://ionicride.com/uae-laws/e-scooter-laws-dubai-2026-legal-status-rta-rules-explained/).
 * **In Sharjah:** your Dubai permit is not a Sharjah authorisation. Follow the
safety checklist above and stay off main roads.
 * **Crossing between them:** never ride on highways such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin
Zayed Road or Al Ittihad Road. Fold the scooter and use the Metro, a bus or a
   car for the crossing.

## What Happens if You Crash in Sharjah

Call the police for any accident involving injury or a vehicle. If you were riding
somewhere not designated for scooters, you are likely to face more of the blame
and cost, and insurance may not help. Our [e-scooter accident guide](https://ionicride.com/uae-laws/had-an-e-scooter-accident-in-dubai-heres-what-to-do-next/)
covers police reports and next steps; most of it applies in Sharjah too.

📋 The Bottom Line

**Your Dubai permit is for Dubai only. Sharjah has not published a full e-scooter
rulebook, and IonicRide could not confirm a Sharjah permit, speed limit or fine
list.**

What is clear: Sharjah Police seize scooters ridden on main roads, in subways and
in places not designated for them, and they urge helmets and reflective clothing.
Ride like you would in Dubai — helmet on, slow, off main roads — and check with
Sharjah Police if you are unsure.
